Re: FWIW Patents by Numbers 4-30-2021 // bigSLOR " I guess my next question is do you think this
strategy of waiving patent protections for the vaccine could be applied
on insulin, and do you think it would benefit diabetics in terms of the
cost and quality?" In a word---NO. The synthetic insulin patent expired 7 years ago (2014). That means it's clear for generics. Generic equivalents are already for sale in other countries---why not here? The U.S. is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for Pharmas. They charge much more here than anywhere else in the world, and they all have highly profitable drug niches to protect. They got the politicians to make it illegal to mail-order cheaper drugs from other countries so they could maintain their exorbitant profit margins here. They have also resisted allowing the govt. (Medicare) negotiate most favored nation prices. Two examples for diabetes is Rybelsus and Ozempic. Both are patented diabetes drugs for type 2 diabetics. If you don't have insurance the price for those two drugs is over $800 per month ea.. With insurance they are tier 3 (expensive), and when you get in the doughnut hole you'll pay full price. A cheap generic insulin would put an end to those money-makers. And keep in mind that insulin has been divided into various niches and re-patented each time. That will continue The Pharmas are only interested in making tons of money---not helping people. The vast majority of politicians are only interested in lining their pockets as well (both Dem and Rep). The govt. might be able to get by with waiving the patents on covid vaccines on the vaccines they had multi-billion dollar agreements with before starting research (like Pfizer), but doing that will be opposed by ALL Pharmas, and most politicians. As I said before, this country is too engulfed in GREED and self-interest to actually help people. |
