Well, I know that the BMW i3 subcompact had an optional charger like that, but it was "petrol" not diesel. Diesel engines are hard to start, and they aren't what I would want in an emergency.
wiki says: "The REx engine operates when battery capacity drops to a pre-specified
level, generating electricity to extend the range to about 320 km
(200 mi) for the European version." It was a 34 horsepower, 2 cylinder engine, so it wasn't going to take you anywhere at blinding speed, after the battery is fully discharged. The REx has a 9 liter tank (slightly over 2 gallons).
So it wasn't something you "carried." It was built into the car (as an option).
