I bought a Westinghouse generator at Costco the year after Sandy (2014). 8500 startup and 7,000 running. Sat in my garage until 03/2018 when we had a 4 day outage. Took it out the second day and after 4 years it started with the first push of the button (battery start) I was amazed that after 4 years it was like brand new. Same thing this time after almost 29 months, first push of the button and it started like new. I'm getting tired of all the extension cords though so I just got an electrician to install a Power Transfer Switch which means just one plug into my elctrical panel and everything in the house (EXCEPT the air conditioner) will work like normal. With all the forecasts saying we're in for more frequent large storms I felt it was prudent to invest in the electrical work. In my 43 years in my home this is the first outage that's happened in the summer and being without AC for 4 days wasn't pleasant but luckily we had a couple of cooler days this week which broke the 90s run. Took the opportunity this morning to change the oil and do a bit of maintenance. Felt after 6 years the unit deserved a break. We have friends with Generac NG systems and although they're great the initial investment can be mid to upper 5 figures and I believe one has to take out a quarterly service contract with them. My $600 Costco deal (on sale from $899) back in 2014 has worked out very well. I've been driving around and am amazed at the number of trees that either snapped or have been uprooted, especially since it's been really dry for many weeks and this storm only brought about 1" of rain. The wind around here didn't seem that strong either with the highest noted at 58mph.
