Shares of Agilent Technologies Inc. A, -0.02% were up 2% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the life-sciences and diagnostics company reported fiscal first-quarter results. Agilent reported net income of $288 million, or 93 cents a share, compared with net income of $197 million, or 63 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue improved 14% to $1.55 billion from $1.36 billion a year ago. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected net income of 90 cents a share on revenue of $1.44 billion. Agilent shares have climbed 49% over the last 12 months. The broader S&P 500 index SPX, -0.06% has improved 16% in the last year.
