OT-Copyright Enforcement LawyerI frankly didn't know a good spot to post this interesting article about the birth of copyright law, so I've placed it here. It bears little relationship to ETFs except I suppose thet they are sort of copies of mutual funds at some level. In any case, I thought I'd post the WSJ piece here for my own edification, if no one else's. http://www.wsj.com/articles/adventures-of-a-jazz-age-lawyer-review-the-man-who-fought-pirates-11581032810 I recall reading a bio of Irving Berlin & how he was the first composer to really make a living at his craft of creating music. The lawyer who fought for copyright law must have been essential to Berlin's ultimate success. Nathan Burkan left a solid legacy for his life. Almost but not totally positive I'd have to say. A couple of tidbits occur to me. (1) Burkan had an estate on Long Island during the depths of the Depression. By all accounts he obviously did well for himself financially. (2) He died at the age of 57 in 1936 from indigestion. I have to suspect there's some unexplained cause that points out how even the wealthiest in those days could be struck down by medical challenges that today may be minor. (Of course could have been cancer as well I suppose since no one would ever fess up to cancer in those days). (3) His legacy of respect evinced by the continuing prizes given in law schools for the best essays on copyright law is one to be much admired. http://jazzagelawyer.com/2019/03/14/coming-january-2020-adventures-of-a-jazz-age-lawyer/ The one downside of his efforts might be an excessive use of copyright law enforcement to suppress challenges to corporate ownership of copyrights. I consider this a fair trade off myself, but its certainly possible to go overboard on it. |
