Re: GREAT DISRUPTIONS AHEAD(MattZN)Ok, here is two year's worth of accumulated energy. I replaced the inverter in May 2015 so a bit more than 2 years on the dot. 730 days. My inverter's totalizer reads 8219 kWh produced. Actual real-life number. So my average over 2 years is 11.26 kWh/day. For where I live in California (which is in the Bay Area, in the Easy Bay, but not quite inland... which matters due to the microclimes). Also my panels are fixed (not tracking), and my roof angle is close to but not perfectly tilted, and gets a bit of shadow from a tree in the morning. Under these conditions using my actual totalizer numbers, my 15-year-old 2.5 kW solar PV system is producing around 11.26 kWh/day on average. -- If we redo the calculations, one modern 340W PV panel (17.65 square feet) would produce around 1.5 kWh/day of total energy (instead of 2.0). So: Americans drive around 8.7 billion miles per day. An EV gets approximately 3 miles per kWh. So we need to produce 2.9 billion kWh a day. Using my conversion, that's 2.9B / 1.5 * 17.65 in square feet of panel area, which is 34.12B square feet. That is a square area, around 185,000 feet x 185,000 feet. Which translates to 35 miles x 35 miles (which I think is closer to what I said in my original posting). -Matt |
