Ford Hires Apple Car Project Chief in Coup for CEO FarleyAuthor: Keown, Callum Barron's (Online) ; New York (Sep 8, 2021). Ford Motor has hired the executive in charge of Apple's secret car project to bolster its own next-generation technology. Doug Field, who played an integral role in developing Tesla's Model 3 electric car in his time at Elon Musk's company, will become Ford's new chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer. "This is just a monumental moment in time—a moment in time that I think we have now to really remake a 118-year-old company," CEO Jim Farley told reporters, according to The Wall Street Journal. Field began his engineering career at Ford in 1987 and has since worked for Apple and Tesla before being rehired by Apple in 2018. Ford announced plans earlier this year to spend $30 billion on vehicle electrification by 2025, up from a previous target of $22 billion. It also expects 40% of vehicle sales to be all-electric by 2030. The move most likely deals a blow to Apple's car project, which has remained something of a mystery. "We're grateful for the contributions Doug has made to Apple and we wish him all the best in this next chapter," Apple said in a statement.
