Saw an interview with Bill Gates not too long ago, where Bill Gates made those same points about the low power density of renewable energy resources.
In fact, am working on a project for a major athletic wear company, who wants to convert to PV, then use that energy to make hydrogen out of water, and then use the hydrogen for their large thermal energy needs. Problem is; well over 7,000 acres of solar panel arrays are needed. All of that would then mean absolutely very little to no agriculture and other plant growth can occur, unless they change to plant species that prefer full shade. The bigger issue is, how much less CO2 would then be absorbed by that stunted plant growth because so much arable land is / would be covered by PV panels.
