Re: Just getting started in REITs... "Perennials"
First, an aside to ‘akaralph’ -- “Perennial” – that made me laugh. You should copyright that term before someone else does and you kick yourself. That term has traction, methinks…
Rip: Keep in mind, unlike eye & hair color, height tendencies, and male-pattern baldness, interest in personal finances is NOT an inherited trait. Any social-media message board (like IV) tends to draw people who have that interest --- that is, folks who have a predisposition to talk about a subject. We are NOT ‘typical’ Americans.
But beyond that, most 30-something young men probably have more, shall we say, “fundamental” things on their mind than money. Nowadays, there is this thing called “Tinder” which did not exist in our ‘yout’. The young folks are probably not chatting up their portfolio when they meet up on Tinder.
But (most) people eventually do come to appreciate financial security, if only because life/reality eventually asserts itself. I doubt the ‘Perennials’ will be much different from the Boomers in that regard --- though Perennials' options may be materially more limited, due to offshoring, AI-automation, and enormous public debts accumulated in peacetime by earlier generations.
I seem to recall the Boomers, in their youth, started out at muscle beach, then graduated to the Summer of Love, the counter-culture, LSD, and a more/less ‘lost decade’ (the 70’s) culminating in Disco, before gaining some sense of collective concern re their financial security. (Yes, that is a caricature of a generation, but then, more mature folks always caricature/bemoan the inadequacies of younger generations, don’t they?)
