More news about Apple in Asia( Emphasis and ====> added ) <<Apple to diversify MacBook production in China, says DIGITIMES Research Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES Asia, Taipei Wednesday 3 August 2022 ====> Apple is expected to diversify its MacBook production in China TO AVOID PLACING ALL THE EGGS IN ONE BASKET, according to DIGITIMES Research senior analyst Jim Hsiao for the Notebook Tracker. The COVID lockdowns in eastern Chinese cities SEVERELY DISRUPTED Apple's shipments in the SECOND QUARTER of 2022. Quanta Computer, which manufactures around 60% of Apple's MacBooks at its plant in Shanghai, is expected to shift some of the production to its plant in Chongqing, western China, Hsiao said citing his sources. Quanta produces the 14.2- and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro and the 13.3-inch and 13.6-inch MacBook Air for Apple. Meanwhile, Foxconn Technology Group (Hon Hai Precision Industry), which assembles the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro as well as the 13.3-inch MacBook Air, handles the remaining 40% of Apple's Mac orders at its plant in Chengdu, western China. However, the proportion of orders given to Foxconn had slightly increased as MacBook shipments from Quanta's plant in Shanghai were seriously undermined by the COVID-19 lockdowns in the second quarter. In the second half of 2022, Apple will gradually shift orders for the 13.3-inch MacBook Air from the two ODMs to China-based Wingtech, which will manufcture [sic] the devices at its plant in Kunming, southwestern China. Apple is looking to have Wingtech making 5% of its MacBook products in 2022 and 10% in 2023, Hsiao estimates. Ultimately, Apple is looking to have Quanta contribute 55% of its MacBook shipments, Foxconn 35%, and Wingtech 10%. However, moving some of the production out of China REMAINS A KEY BUSINESS STRATEGY for Apple. In the long term, Foxconn is expected to begin making MacBook products at its plant in Vietnam, which will also be used to make iPads.>> https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20220802VL206/apple-digitimes-research-foxconn-macbook-quanta-wingtech.html |
