To me the concerns with nuclear power plants are not the design, safety controls, engineering, or management. As best I know, these are all top notch. The only concern I have is with the educability and work ethic of the low level workers.
Nuclear power plants are and will continue to be a significant source of energy generation worldwide.
As to safety, far more lives are lost each year in coal mining and oil extraction accidents, both onshore and offshore, than have ever been lost in nuclear power plant construction and operation.
We rarely consider that the energy we take for granted as a necessary part of modern society comes with a human life price tag.
People fear radiation because they cannot see it and because of the horrors of atomic bombing.
These same people will soak up ionizing radiation for hours on the beach without concern, yet skin cancers from solar radiation kill far more people than have ever been even injured by nuclear power.
As far as genetic mutation from nuclear accidents is concerned, nature is very strict about her mutated offspring. The vast majority of mutated embryos never survive. The few mutants that do go into politics or the law.
