Michael Cohen is a Republican political hack, but he is now owned by Democratic
political hacks. Cohen will speak any and every word that is put in his mouth,
but nothing will ever come of that.
Trump is a billionaire who was self directed. He is at the top of the IRS's
audit scoring list. Every year he will get an IRS audit, and it very well is
probably an audit team (for his level). Like clockwork. Nothing will ever
come of that either.
Every time the IRS receives a tax return, it is scored for audit. The higher
the points, the more likely the audit. The IRS does not disclose its methodology
for scoring audits, but the tax-preparers have a pretty good idea of what it
is. It is thought that it is a function of income times complexity. The
higher the income, and the higher the complexity, the higher the audit score.
People of Trump's status get audited annually.
Tax audit scoring is designed to gain the most return per audit possible for
the IRS. They don't want to waste their time on a thousand here or three
thousand there. They are looking for millions or tens of millions.
The IRS employs only so many auditors. They maximize their audit receipts
in this way.
(The IRS also does statistical audits at random, so a $20,000 income return
has a chance at one of those. But the "Big" audits are scored.)
