If I may, your long term common tax rate has been executed on the common. Your rate has been realized upon your sell of commons. That is/was that.
Now this: You bought preferred for xx amount. If you sell those preferred you will occur a capital loss,short term but still a capital loss. You now buy commons.If and when OSTK part or whole is sold and your commons are realized,your gains from those commons are capital gains. You can offset your capital gains by applying a capital loss against those gains from the capital loss on the preferred.
