CMR Surgical / Cambridge Medical RoboticsJust saw a short 2min 43sec documentary/promo on Sky News (Sky News - Sept 15, 2019, "Robots will bring 'revolution' to NHS") concerning the Versius robotic surgical unit with "Royal College of Surgeons" as backdrop. Mention was made of the NHS soon rolling out the Versius across the country. A figure framework of a 50 million GBP was mentioned. Approved in the EU?? The CMR site mentions "The VersiusŪ surgical robotic system is approved for use across Europe. Versius is not cleared for sale in the USA." They showed the unit being used (not on a patient) with a lot of hype at a London hospital. Dunno, but from the 2:43 minutes, there seems to be a base unit mass (stability) problem, amplified at the extremities. It's as if the operator had tremors, even jerky at one point. Looks like an operating theater dome over the site with silicone dampers for the tool openings, was an after thought to reduce those tremors. Maybe some Levodopa regiment is needed. However, vibration, tremors and jerky movement was clearly visible. Methinks they need a bigger base unit for stability, and more solid, massive arms to 'calm' the operating tips. Some finesse is missing. I have no fear of competition at this juncture. Took a peek, and a press release with NO DATE, but a hidden PDF creation date of Aug 23, 2018, mentions: "The company is currently undergoing validation studies for regulatory approval processes in Europe. CMR Surgical expects to submit for CE mark and be in hospitals in the next six months." So.... Feb-Mar 2019. Any comments? |
