Reasons for Dip in Price on 11/1/18After the sharp gains on Wednesday, today's weakness may be ascribed to normal profit-taking. However, there may be more to the story given the appearance of an article in the NY Times on 11/1 which reports on a study which suggests that minimally invasive surgery for cervical cancer has poorer results than open surgery. Interestingly, this is not the case for uterine cancer which has the same results for both open and minimally invasive surgery. The article also reports on the old news that morcellation of tumors can result in the spread of cancer. The total impact of the article is negative but careful reading indicates that the number of procedures involving cervical cancer is limited and should not significantly impact use of the daVinci. Old timers may recall the attacks by some NYC surgeons on the ongoing shift to minimally invasive surgery. Subsequently, surgeons, hospitals and patients recognized the relative advantages of minimally invasive surgery over conventional surgery for many procedures. This, of course, is reflected in the stock price of ISRG. You may read today's article below: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/31/health/cervical-cancer-surgery.html |
