Is EDF still interested in Microturbines ?BACKGROUND (as I remember it) : * It may have been around 2002 when Electricite de France (the largest Electric Utility in the world) financed the first evaluation of a microturbine versus a Mercedes Diesel for tests in a Landfill in Italy. The tests were run by then privately owned Swiss company Verdesis which was then and for many years thereafter our Distributor. * As a result, a year or two later a contractor (Sofimat ?) installed near Paris the first large commercial Biogas Electric Plant using microturbines commercially for EDF electricity production. * A couple of years later EDF took an equity position (65% I seem to remember) in Verdesis as a strategic way to grow into Biogas "Renewable Energy" down the road.(Now they own 100% Verdesis, which is no longer our Distributor). * A few years later in what was announced as a way to accelerate growth of the Biogas / microturbines move, they created a new subsidiary ACRONA to develop the concept on a larger scale. They also started an ambitious project in Brazil, which unfortunately did not materialize due to local complications... * A few years later, they started an ACRONA unit in South Africa which at the time was expected to become very active. * They were also quite active in Spain and Portugal through their associates at "Micropower Europe" PRESENT: Googling around I see that they are still active with some recent installations (the latest,I believe, in Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Hungary). FUTURE : Other than hopes and wishful thinking, I have no information I can share with this Board, except a couple of links and comments that I will list in a follow-up post. I'm just curious because new CHP & CCHP, coupled with Microgrids, could really renew their old "microturbine's love affair"--Cheers--Gene |
