 I have always thought seeing such analyses against aid and wars are deliberately shaded to make a political point. That point being that the funds go nowhere, do nothing etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the funds go to buying US made material and paying salaries to Americans. Those funds of course are used for other efforts, buying homes, groceries, cars, etc.
 
None of these commentaries ever quantifies what would have been the cost had we walked away from a war such as WWII or Iraq, even Vietnam. Vietnam in that it was once closely allied to China and Russian but is now on good terms with the US and a manufacturing center for American goods. Follow the money, but follow it all the way, to the good it does.
