"We would have to see what the patent arrangements are" with Turbo, Linspire and Xandros, "but we will enforce the license," the soft-spoken Allison said with some vehemence. And without Samba Turbolinux won't be able to tap into Active Directory - unless Microsoft writes Linux code.
Obviously, based on the source, this quote needs to be treated with some skepticism. That said, I think one of Microsoft's key strategies recently has been trying to create divisions within the FOSS community. Even if the GPL3 license permits one FOSS group to use the law to destroy another, I consider taking "advantage" of this capability to
be incredibly counterproductive.
Ever since I saw the first draft on the GPL3, this has been my greatest fear. While the license provides no protection against the real threats to FOSS (the Acacia type patent trolls) it provides ample opportunity for
hot headed idiots to do immense self inflicted harm. I believe there are, unfortunately, some in the FOSS movement who
are more interested in making political points than ensuring the success of open source software.
