I am responsible for a certain software analysis program that is used in a critical real-time environment every night (yes, night-time) and will continue to be used for the next 3, or possibly 8, years. It is written using a scripting language that is no longer popular, so colleagues have suggested that, in the interest of long-term support, ChatGPT be used to translate the code to a more well-used scripting language (ok, python - no problem). However, in response, I forwarded to them an article very similar to the one cited by El Cort describing the very specifics of this case. Here is the response that I received (within the past hour) in return:
"Ouch!"
So what is ChatGPT? A silver bullet? Or the primrose path to disaster? You be the judge.
