Re: Independent study into collapse of World Trade Center Building 7

However, over 100 massive steel columns do not simply break into small pieces as a result of a gravitational collapse.

Just my opinion, but if the block consisting in the top 30 stories -- or so -- were collapsing onto uncompromised steel pillars, then breaking into small pieces is exactly what I would expect, flexibility having been designed out of the structure -- beyond wind-loading or earthquake resistance which would be standard precautions.
90% of what is below those 30 stories is air. In the event that somehow those 30 stories were to drop evenly, they would not drop neatly onto the tops of the columns that had somehow become isolated. The vast majority of the masonry and other debris would fall into the huge gap between the outside perimeter columns and the core columns. That is assuming you believe that there is symmetrical  damage, and you are not experiencing a local collapse in the area of supposed structural damage from the aircraft impact.
