July 6th iss., BloombBusWeek cover: "The Heist Issue" -- includes Huawei 5G Hack story
Among the stories is an overview of Nortel in 2004 being hacked for 800 documents with China obtaining a massive download of Nortel Networks files that included soup-to-nuts: Marketing, Sales contracts, Product Develolpment, R&D designs and meeting minutes for their prized optical unit -- a vacuum hose to billions of dollars worth of R&D. From that download they began their quest into 4G and 5G.
When Nortel went bankrupt in 2009, Huawei made generous offers to 20 Nortel's scientists who were doing groundwork in 5G. These scientists, in turn, guided Huawei through the basics of 5g polar coding possibilities (a way of using algorithms to correct for errors) and Huawei was able to get themselves into the committees to established 5G standards. Huawei now dominates the standards-setting organization.
Prediction from my reading would be that 5G may be slower to be adopted in the
West but the trend will follow Britain (where Huawei won its first big network contracts) and the West will continue to drop Huawei. This may be the long term opportunity for Ericsson (Ribbon).
