Re: OnePlus 8T October 14As I wrote earlier, the importance of the 8T is not only that we get an updated phone out there, but that we can move past the disaster decision of splitting OneP's tech between the 8 and and Pro -- with only the 8 at the carriers and the materially better 8 Pro only sold direct ....Rather than put out their best tech, OneP got cute..they clearly should have taken less margin and packed all the good stuff into the 8 model. I think they'll still sell the 8 -- and obviously discount it in October, and sell the 8T for the price the 8 is selling...and try to forget the Pro ever existed. A key question is whether VZ is really on board and will carry the 8T. I tend to think so because TMUS will. You can see that TMUS now has a slightly larger share of the US market than VZ ( the only bar that matters is the last one for Q2 which shows the merged TMUS.) There is a chance we'll also see a mid-level OneP phone show up in the US -- the Nord has been a big success and a version of it should be going global. As I wrote earlier, if a version of the Nord shows up in the US, I think the carriers are going to insist it has a PXWL chip, in order to avoid the brand chaos that OPPO stepped into with how they positioned their versions of the FindX so far this year. OnePlus was smarter in givng the Nord an entirely separate brand from the premium OnePlus phones, whereas OPPO just slapped "FindX" on multiple quality level phones and dissipated the brand value...and they did this in a remarkable short time in just this past year. ..Xiaomi, it would seem, would want to get some sort of parallel video-comprable product out, making them our other Tier 1. |
