More ... Apples ...Received this from Joel @ Okanagan Specialty Fruits (posted with permission) Hello Bill, Thanks for reaching out to us and for your continued interest in our apples! Jenavive is off this week, but hopefully I can be of assistance in her stead. I should mention that, while the exact locations and timing of fruit availability is primarily up to our distributors, at this point it is unlikely that there will be Arctic Golden slices for sale in the Seattle area this year, unfortunately. Our supply from our first harvest of young trees is very limited... As for your question, the short answer is that Okanagan Specialty Fruits, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Intrexon, is aiming to become a large-scale, vertically-integrated treefruit company. We not only have developed the science behind nonbrowning apples, we are also growing the fruit ourselves, developing packaging, working directly with retailers, etc. This being the case, the main goal is to grow a successful Arctic brand, beginning with pre-sliced bagged fruit, and the returns would come primarily through product sales. Currently, only ~2% of US apples are sold as fresh slices, whereas in comparison, ~2/3rds of US carrot sales are "baby" carrots. We are optimistic that our nonbrowning apple varieties, which don't require preservatives like other sliced apples on the market, will offer an unmatched eating experience and can potentially grow the category as a whole. Of course, we plan to expand beyond fresh slices, but as new trees take significant time to plant and mature, it will be a gradual process. Hope that helps, and please don't hesitate to let us know if we can answer any further questions! Best regards, Joel |
