my mid-year review of NPTN

INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too.

NPTN (market cap is $0.524B was $0.456B)

Neophotonics is a high-tech electro-optical component manufacturer I am aware of because of their work in very-high speed electro-optical switches for communications networks. That's a high demand market and should be growing as more people work, learn, shop, socialize, and are entertained via the internet.

They have several competitors, but are doing sufficiently well to have increased revenues and income over the last few years. They were also rumored to be a buyout candidate after a competitor's buyout failed. I haven't heard anything about that since that news earlier this year.

My investment strategy is to buy shares of companies that are hard for analysts to analyze, understand, or explain to their clients, then hold as their need and hoped-for dominance grow. Their financial trends are encouraging, but a buyout could make that moot. Ironically, I own shares of NPTN because one of their competitors (GGOX) was about to turn profitable and was bought out at a small premium to value (in my opinion). prior to that GGOX bought out LMRA which had solid-state electro-optical switches that promised to have high performance and high reliability. The story continues buyout to buyout to...?

DISCLOSURE LTBH but only just begun in 2017 as I switched from GigPeak's buyout and into NPTN, thinking that staying in the same industry would be a good thing. Not so far.

(I've also collected links to the other discussion boards and my other stocks over on my blog )
