BIIB receives €-s for pml-researchhttp://www.myelounge.de/?p=284 Alexander Otto in his blog criticizes the fact that BIIB receives € 933 070.- for PML-research in Bochum (Prof. Gold) from the German Government. Afterall, BIIB "made a profit of 970.1 million U.S. dollars in 2009 " ... and of course there is no profit sharing with the German tax payer, in case the research project is successful. "rdo" comments that it is not only going to benefit BIIB`s Tysabri but all the other companies, they can then market their products without risk. The sooner this assay is out the better of course, says rdo - but why is this being promoted by the Government ... This is a google translation Tysabri & PML - the state of things Alexander Otto July 19, 2010 8:22 pm research of Since 2005, Tysabri PML cases, 58 have occurred. 12 of the disease have been fatal. According to epidemiological data exists a time-dependent risk of exposure. It is treated in under 12 months with virtually zero, 12 to 24 months, especially for chemotherapy-naïve patients and relevant increases from 24 months to about 1 to 700th In addition, the data are statistically too vague to call it a plateau or a further time-dependent increase. For Biogen Idec, it is therefore of pressing importance to optimize both the treatment of PML, and to develop reliable surrogate marker to identify pml-risk patients before the outbreak of the disease. Only then can the company maintain its Tysabri sales continue long term. One would therefore think that the necessary research expenses would be borne entirely by Biogen Idec. After all, the company had for the year 2009 from a profit of 970.1 million U.S. dollars. But far from the German Ministry for Education and Research donated to the American biotech company sometimes just 933 070 €, so that at the Neurological Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum can be researched on the above issues (project number 01GI0914). A profit sharing is the German taxpayer, if successful, but even non-understandable given the prospect. So much for free market but then has to be. Just think of the possibilities .. more manufacturers can now more PML-inducing drugs for other indications introduce, and with almost no safety concerns. So there exists yet, of a certain public interest! : P (Disclaimer: The sooner this will get a grip, the better, of course. But I understand any more than Alex, why the federal government needs to promote this.)Tysabri & PML - der Stand der Dinge Alexander Otto Juli 19, 2010 08:22 pm Beforschung Seit 2005 sind unter Tysabri 58 PML-Fälle aufgetreten. Also da existiert doch schon ein gewisses Allgemeininteresse! |
