I'm assuming that, by "used", you mean the operator (MMR) introduced the chlorite into the well during drilling and/or completion operations. The chlorite McMichael was talking about in the presentation was not introduced into the formation by the operator. Chlorite is one of several clay minerals that commonly precipitate out of solution in the naturally occurring formation water originally in the reservoir pore spaces. It was there for many millions of years before the Highlander well was drilled. Which clay minerals precipitate in a particular reservoir depends on the temperature and pressure regimes the reservoir goes through as it is buried deeper and deeper over time and ... importantly ... the mineral content of the sediments that originally made up that reservoir rock. Note that a little later in the presentation after talking about the chlorite, McMichael talked about the source of sedimentation feeding different deltas in the Gulf. The sediments feeding deposition at the Tuscaloosa production around Baton Rouge, Highlander and the Tusc. non-productive sands in Davy Jones #2 came from the old Ouachita and Appalachian mountains ... not the ancestral Rockies, as is the case for most of the younger sediments in the Gulf. What McMichael is saying is that chlorite is the key to preserving ultra-deep porosity and a Ouachita/Appalachian source for the sediments is key for having sufficient chlorite. Basically, he's saying that the Tusc is the primary objective for ultra-deep drilling the the Gulf basin.
