My mid-year review of RGSEINTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too. Real Goods Solar RGSE (was RSOL, market cap was $0.008B EOY2015 is 0.003B mid2016) Real Goods Solar provides the goods and services for installing solar power systems as well as other off-the-grid equipment. While I'd typically go into greater depth about their business, the company has become more noticeable as an example of how businesses with long histories and great potentials don't always succeed, even in attractive markets and industries. The company is now valued at less than many upscale homes. They continue to operate at a loss, even while making over $45M in 2015 and $70M in 2014. They had early mover advantages, a market improved by subsidies, demand from consumers for solar power, and yet, their stock is down ~68% in the last six months and 92% in the last year. Evidently, longevity does not instill sufficient wisdom or guard against mistakes. My position is worth so little that it doesn't benefit me much to sell it, not even for the taxes because it is in a tax-deferred account. If they turn this around, it will be a marvelous story, but I've seen no evidence that they have those skills. DISCLOSURE LTBH since the mid-2008 IPO. Glad I sold some for diversification. (I've also collected links to the other discussion boards and my other stocks over on my blog http://trimbathcreative.wordpress.com/2016/06/30/semi-annual-exercise-mid-2016/) |
