.....then that is roughly $4.25/ounce. Nike's lowest weight shoe is 1.20 oz's and expensive. How many ounces will someone put in their standard tennis shoe to say it is made with Spider Silk?
"Once production is up and running, Thompson estimates it will cost less
than $68 per pound ($150 per kilogram) produced to make the silk. A
competing method using
E.coli bacteria costs more than $61,800 per pound ($130,000 per kilogram) of silk produced."
They say they want goo down to $100/kilo....good luck with being able to do that. Possible with massive scale I suppose. When you are dealing with claims, it is hard to know.....
I wonder if KBLB was forced to take down these estimates. They took the analysis down from the website, last I checked. It took some looking to find the above.
Anyway, why would someone think it is going to be too expensive to put in low performance materials.... If they put 12 ounces(which should be high) in a pair of shoes, it would be at a cost of less than 50 bucks. I wonder how much one of those shootpack panels weigh? I think some folks really aren't grasping how little material goes into tennis shoes and such. I think they may be surprised....or I will be.
