Virtualization (silkworms -> fermentation) is the future. But when is the future?

Several years, decade, decades, hmm.

Gene/fermentation technology, and advancements in water-based processes continue to advance.

Kraig's take is worth reading: Comparing Spider Silk Production Technologies

My bet is nearer to a decade to get cost-effective, compatible thread materials from yeast or E. coli, but when that happens ...  It will also happen coincidentally in other material fields (such as ceramics that mimic abalone nacre [mother of pearl]).
