Fundi ...thanks for sharing the article. I agree that we should have a legitimate conversation about limiting voting by the elderly ...especially those who are under full-time government care in nursing homes (Medicaid) due mostly to mental impairments caused by dementia, etc. But, realistically, it ain't gonna happen as long as the elderly (of which I am a member) have such strong lobbyists (AARP) and represent such a powerful voting block.
By the same token, I think such a "conversation" should consider limiting voting by teens. There seems to be a movement among liberals to reduce the voting age down to as low as sixteen. As a retired high school teacher, I can assure you that MOST teens have limited ability to fully understand the issues and to make decisions based on rational thought instead of emotion. During Biblical times, it think most civilizations didn't consider a person an adult until their 20th birthday (and in some cases didn't even include their names on census rolls). Studies have shown that the human brain is not fully formed until late teens or early twenties. And our government even acknowledges that most are not "responsible enough" to purchase alcohol until age 21. Heck, Obamacare even admits that "kids" are not responsible enough to know they need to purchase medical insurance until they're 25 ...so they're allowed to stay on their parents' insurance until then.
Yes, there are some teens and 90-year-olds who are critical thinkers but not a large percentage of their groups. So ...let's begin the conversation with limiting voting age (and alcohol, draft registration, and buying a firearm) to those age 20 to 80.
