SeeYa Technology OLED MicrodisplaysWhile we patiently wait for an eMagin manufacturing partner, there's been massive investment in OLED microdisplays in China. One that probably shouldn't be underestimated is SeeYa Technology... 1) In 2017, SeeYa announced plans for a $300 million fab, that is now in operation. It's built around 300mm wafers, not 200mm. Capacity is ~20 million displays annually. 2) In 2019, SeeYa introduced several OLED microdisplays, including 2.6Kx2.6K at 3000 nits (EMAN brightness target for XLE). 3) Ron is currently selling all of SeeYa's displays over at OLED-info. 4) OLED-a.org recently published SeeYa's product portfolio and roadmap. Roadmap for 2022/23 includes a full color display at 20K nits. 5) The upcoming 20K nits display is apparently based on SeeYa's own "dPd" technology using a silicon nitride shadow mask, for which they received a China patent last year. This is a knock-off of eMagin's original dPd patents, except using a glass handle instead of a silicon wafer. Clearly, eMagin's dPd IP is a lot more than a patent or two for silicon nitride shadow masks. Much of what they've patented since their original work with the University of Rochester is about the equipment infrastructure to transition dPd into reality. But this SeeYa patent could represent a crack in their IP armor. The massive spending and headcount available in China is a real potential risk. I wonder if the folks in East Fishkill know about this SeeYa patent? Maybe one of you guys with contacts at the company could ask them about it. This info is what prompted me to recently say to Lurker that it's time for them "to shit or get off the pot" wrt the consumer space. |
