Shell and BP are back in the carbon capture game now that the new tax credits are on the table in the US. High time, let's hope they are more innovative than during their last forays into CC. The Alberta and Canadian governments are leery after forking out some $1.7 billion in direct subsidies for CC mainly to Shell and Saskpower, plus more millions in hidden operating subsidies. Out of all that dough the Canadian innovators, CO2 Solutions and Inventys, got about $15 million in dribs and drabs for developing systems that promise 50-60% reduction in carbon capture costs. Inventys and CO2 have met their stated carbon recovery and cost goals at every stage, unlike the big operators that went wildly over budget.
