Re: Inflation, like cancer, is spreading, but is hardly detectable in some areas... Called a locksmith
to replace roller bearings on patio door. Lady said $450 + cost of
rollers which are $150 each. I said What???? I see them at Preston
Hardware in Ottawa for $6-$7!! Just couple general comments regarding the service cost inflation. 1. This is very basic - classic supply vs demand issue, exactly how it should be when many would be plumbers/electricians/pool guys... are replaced with college grads with liberal study degrees in gender studies, BTW, requesting their loan forgiveness... 2. It just happened that I've recently replaced my window rollers - $6 at Home Depot and 20 min of my time. FWIW, I do 95% of home repair staff, not because I can't afford, just feels good plus no need to wait for a stranger in my house, plus typical outcome is better. I do feel bad for people who can't do it due to advance age/health issues, but not for the people of working age. I understand that this board has many old timers, so the best I could recommend - find a local handyman you could trust and try to build some relations. While there are real issues with many in next generation unable or unwilling to do "dirty jobs" (love watching Mike Rowe) it does sound ridiculous when people complaining about getting 3 pieces of meat vs 4. Sorry for this OT rant, just could not resist... |
