Re: Irish Windfall Profits Tax announced today...Stupid F'n Sloppy Press (edited)Did you all notice the asterisk in the news article? It was on the government's press release but wasn't copied into the Irish Times article. And this is what it reads: "Taxable profits which are more than 20% above the baseline will be subject to the temporary solidarity contribution at a rate of 75%. This will lead to an effective rate of 0% for windfall gains of up to 20%, an effective rate of 50% for windfall gains of 60%* and an effective rate of 60% for windfall gains of 100% (that is, where profits have doubled).".... "*(60% minus 20% baseline = 40% eligible for contribution at rate of 75%; that is, 30%)." Now, I'm still absorbing this, but I'm thinking it's a hell of a lot less scary than, well, the usual attempts to create volatility (or unresearched comments, take your pick). If it is 30% for earnings more than 60% above the 4 year average, this is Sorry for the revisions, still absorbing.... Regards, Naamkat |
