Re: OT: Economic question: Unemployment or Inflation? I still can't figure out how this is possible. I understand that somebody might afford to retire a year, or maybe two years, earlier. Especially if one is in good health and has a guaranteed pension, or was able to save a lot of money. Quite possible for few, but very unlikely for the most. I personally know nobody who just decided to quit his job 'just because'. But I see plenty of young adults working at the grocery store/convenience story wearing shirts with some college logo. Have they dropped out? I don't think $10K of loan forgiveness from JB will save their ass. They will probably keep working at the same levels for their entire career. Or, if that is all they can accomplish after the graduation, it is their own fault. But, in general, everyone has to live somewhere, everyone has to eat, and most people need some medical or dental care from time to time. If you just quit then you are not even eligible for state unemployment benefits. How long would those Covid payments last? I believe that for the majority of people those payments were a pure windfall, and they got spent shortly after - for booze, weed, travel, or for regular things. So what - everybody is quitting, and moving with the entire family back into mom's basement? And mom is struggling with her own expenses, and more expensive food, utilities, and fuels? Or, someone you've met once long ago, calls you and asks if he can move into your house, with his family and pets - just because he quit his job? And he gently reminds you that he only eats organic kosher food, and his kids are on special diet, and have allergies for everything around? I still can't figure it out... |
