From a friend in Germany - things are not looking good...The economic situation is becoming more and more scary here. In our county of about 110,000 inhabitants people are talking about 50,000 potentially jobless people when we have not got enough natural gas for our three relatively large chemical plants. The prices of food, particularly, of bakery products are close to double like the prices in pre-crisis time. How far people will peacefully tolerate the option of loosing life standard I cannot say but the atmosphere is getting stranger every day. It might be more than the consequences of war in the Ukraine. In some way, the middle class is the big looser again. Note: My friend is Hungarian German. (As a child he lived through Russia's invasion of Hungary, saw the piles of bodies in the streets... and eventually was able to move to Germany.) He a world class scientist with over 20 patents in his field. He lives in an industrial area. He included some thoughtful articles about the Ukraine situation, but those go beyond the scope of this board. |
