Coal I lived in my previous house from 1983 to 1993. It was an all electric split level with electric coils in the ceiling for heat. What a stupid concept. Heat rises. My house was cold even when the temperature read 70. I installed a wood stove. Wood stoves thirty years ago were inefficient. The stove was dirty and a pain in the ass to load. I had to empty the ash every two days. I bought a Franco Belge Coal Stove similar to the one in this pic: I built a coal bin and spent about $80 for a ton of PA anthracite. I used about two tons a year. The house was toasty and the delicate blue flame was beautiful. I filled the hopper every two days and emptied the ash about once a week. The only downside was keeping it going during warm spells. I just checked the price of local coal. It was about $40 a ton two years ago and is around $250 at present. I have tons of free wood on my property and I am still able to cut, haul, split and stack it. I have seven acres of woods. All my ash tries have died and I have a lifetime supply without ever cutting a living tree. My modern wood stove is a joy. I use it for pleasure as well as to lower my oil bill. Check out your local price of firewood as oil prices go up. patterj |
