Over time Li-based battery performance will continue to improve. Causes of degradation are reasonably well understood. Among the different Li chemistries, Li-titanate is exceptionally long-lasting, but is expensive and its specific energy is low. NASA has interesting multi-cycle batteries in satellites. Current vehicle batteries are a compromise among Li chemistries that are fast charging, long-lived, high energy density, temperature performance parameters, etc. As yet, can't get the maximum of all qualities in a single chemistry. BTW, for maximum life in cell phone and laptops (as well as vehicles), best to not fully charge or discharge a Li-ion battery.
