Between High School and College I spent 3 months as a coal miner.
Best job I ever had; it provided the incentive to study hard in college …. so I would never have to enter another mine.
As soon as I came home from the mine, I would take off my steel toed boots and my socks …. There were tiny black dots (of coal dust) demarking the location of every stitch in the leather boot.
Next, I would head to the bath tub. After bathing, I would carefully clean the bath tub; then I would immediately refill the tub for a second bath to finally get clean.
There are some jobs which will be very hard to fill.
Working in a tire stop you can look out the door and see whether the sun is shining. Working day shift in a mine, you might only see the sun on weekends.
Coal miners do not tend to die of old age; they die before they reach old age.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was likewise difficult to find miners; the coal mines of Appalachia resorted to recruiting overseas; sulfur miners from Sicily, coal miners from Poland and Eastern Europe …. and mining engineers and foreman from the coal fields of Wales.
There are some jobs which will be very hard to fill; for very good reasons.
