Re: Biden wants 15 billion to install 500,000 charging stations - switched to OT
the other problem is the variance in fill time.
US gas pumps run around 10 gallons per minute.
So a very very small car might take 1 minute to fill
A Very very large pickup might take 3.5 minutes to fill.
Paying, dilly dallying with the car, and pulling out all probably takes around 2 or 3 minutes per car too.
So it doesn't matter what kind of car it is.
But what happens if a Ford Lightning long-range (and everyone always buys the biggest battery because everyone but me has infinite money and vehicle cost is no object insofar as I can tell from the media) is in front of you for a charge slot.
A 80 KWH tesla might pull in need 60. That should take about 15 minutes to charge. But a Long range Lightning might need 100 kwh to get the same range boost (especially towning or carrying.)
That means that Pickup truck will hold the charger for probably 25 minutes to charge.
REalistically, a supercharging station might be able to handle 2 Lightnings per hour on a Memorial day weekend.
But you aren't going to sit in the F#$%ing magic car for 30 minutes. You go inside and do shit. So you likely have to come back to the vehicle and unhook when it notifies you it's done, which gas drivers don't do because the time is so short where the hell would you go.
So if the EV's have 5 to 10-minute tails to their charging that ICE vehicles don't have due to "wandering" it's even worse.
Meanwhile, a Gas pump will fill the same vehicle on the same frame from the same manufacturer with an ICE engine 10x per hour, using real-time rates. Might be able to 12 per hour on a busy weekend with CC pre pays and all the cars sitting in a line just banging through.
Supercharger plazas will have to be the size of Football stadium parking lots along highways and they will have to have powerplants that just standby for them.
