Open Division

"It’s hard to put together a team in the salary-cap NFL era that excels at everything. So in order to even begin to achieve success, you’ve got to be really good at one thing. The Cowboys are counting on that being their offense in 2014, starting with the men up front.

Last year, the Cowboys were the only team in the NFC East to rank in the top 10 in yards per rushing attempt (eighth) and fewest sacks allowed (seventh). If Martin plays as effectively right away as center Travis Frederick, taken much later in the first round, did a year ago, this should be a superior line.

The biggest thing toward understanding opportunity for Dallas is simply recognizing the task at hand. We’re not talking about going to Glendale, Ariz., next February for the Super Bowl. We’re talking about winning the NFC East.

Over the last four years, this has been the most winnable division in football. Only two 10-win teams won divisions last year. The Eagles were one of them. Only two 10-win teams won divisions in 2012. The Redskins were one of them.

In 2011, the Giants captured their third Lombardi Trophy after beating the Cowboys on the final night of the regular season to get to 9-7.

The NFC East has not produced a team with one of the league’s top eight records since 2010. It is highly winnable. For everyone.

The Eagles won it last year despite the perceived handicaps of a rookie head coach, a midseason quarterback change and a potentially divisive racial situation in the locker room. The Redskins won the East in 2012 with rookies at quarterback and running back after a 3-6 start.

And you want to eliminate the Cowboys because they lost a linebacker?
