Re: Off-topic: Venvezuelan refugees, Lessons from Chile not heard Yup, it is a tough situation in Venezuela. If the Trump sanctions are biting and, yes, they do appear to be biting, then more Venezuelans will leave sooner than later. One of many reasons that I am not a big fan of harsh sanctions on Venezuela. Let the regime implode under its own weight, por favor. Spend money on refugees with minimal fanfare. Get journalists and writers and even intelligence officers on the ground to record and write down stories of the refugees, their personal tragedies. Use them later to shame the Maduro regime. Play the long game. More interesting and relevant to the Venezuelan crisis is the summary of events leading up to the violent coup d'etat in Chile, late1973. Salvadore Allende's made a whole series of textbook mistakes that trashed the economy and sent inflation rates soaring with nothing but painful consequences. I would guess that Pinochet probably was treated to a concise summary by trusted sources but who would want to ruin a good story? Especially from a trendy lefty journalists who thinks it is stylish to belittle anybody in a uniform. Was nobody in the Chavista movement aware of the details and events leading up to the violent end of the Allende government? People like to carp about Americans not knowing and understanding history. Do Venezuelans leftists experience even greater difficulty in understanding history? Si, es verdad; los Chavistas son mas tontos que los yanquis. Que cosa che.... |
