Re: tink is back!> Why can't I buy insurance across state lines? Good question. During the haggling about Obama care it was actually the Democrats who oppose it, while Republicans were pushing for it. Pissed me off. There is corruption and COI in both parties of course. (One thing we agree on, besides the single malt superiority over tequila ) > First, it's tax-payer money. So why just not let people but the insurance they want/need? Sure, it all comes from peoples work. Marx would be proud of you But here are the reasons for a single payer system. For basic! insurance. You can of course still buy supplement insurance. In random order: 1. We are mostly soft, compassionate and suckers. So when many people skip paying for insurance for many years, when they get sick we(*) still help them, and pay for their treatment. So, I prefer mandatory insurance/=tax rather than propagate policies of letting people die on streets in front of hospitals which refuse admittance. (*) We pay for it with taxes (your favorite), but also through higher cost of the health care. The hospitals and doctors spread the cost over the paying customers, by having higher fees. 2. The freedom of buying insurance you want is mostly BS, since inadequate regulations make comparing different insurance companies and plans nearly impossible for most of the people. Even if you spend weeks studying and comparing those. Furthermore, if your insurance company turns inadequate for some problem you didn't anticipate, new drugs, new treatments they won't cover, the other companies which do cover it will not take you, pre-existing condition... Of course you could regulate this part, but you are against apparently such things. 3. Even if you agree to regulate the hell out of the companies, pre-existing condition, uniform plans so one can compare them, uniform forms for submitting claims, etc... this creates extra levels of bureaucracies - and we know Flag hates bureaucracies 4. The overhead costs of a single payer should be much lower than the current system, for reasons in #3, and because fewer people will be needed in the insurance paper shuffling, both on the insurer and doctor! side. 5. Because I say so, and the Prez secretly supports it too |
