podcasts I guess podcasts have been around for about 15 years. I have been a little slow to the game, but am now an avid fan The last several years that I worked, individuals in my specialty, Emergency Medicine, became early innovators in free educational podcasts and I started listening to some. They were initially a pain in the butt to download via RSS feed to a PC and then on to an iPod (or especially on my Zune). Now I flash forward to my retirement 18 months ago. My son suggested that I start looking into podcasts on other topics. I had no idea that there are innumerable free subjects to listen to. I guess free does not generate much advertizing. There are now multiple free apps that are profoundly simple to download and use on a smart phone: I use Pocket Casts on an iPhone. -I started with 12 Byzantine Rulers by Lars Bronsworth. -Next came The History of Ancient Greece by Ryan Stitt. I listened to about 80 hours and got halfway through the Peloponnesian Wars before fulfilling my life long dream of going to Greece. -I went back to Bronsworth for The Norman Centuries -I then listed to Mike Duncan's The History of Ancient Rome, well over 100 hours in length. -I am currently doing the multiyear Revolutions podcast by Duncan. I have completed the English Revolution (King Charles and Oliver Cromwell), The American Revolution, The French Revolution (really crazy stuff), and am now doing the Haitian Revolution. I have tried other genres including: Philosophize this, Planet Money and Freakonomics Radio, but I just enjoy history the most. I am an avid walker and listen with earbuds. I also listen while working out, driving or doing mindless chores. patterj |
