From Blossom to Ripe
My tomatoes are blooming pretty well. That got me to wondering how long until the first ripe tomatoes. According to one article, it take 20-30 days for the fruit to reach full size. I then takes another 20-30 days for the full sized fruit to ripen. From my experience, plum and cherry varieties ripen quickest, followed by larger salad tomatoes, and finally by the slicing varieties. My guess is that beef steak varieties take the longest to reach full size and ripen.
Looks like I’ll be looking at an early June ripening date. Some years we get our earliest ripe tomato in late April but our early starts did nothing this year.
