Re: B.C. attempts to cool Alberta trade war by referring pipeline fight to courts
I'm sure the BC government will ask the courts to order a halt to construction pending the outcome of the courts ruling... and then most likely an appeal of the decision would call for a continuation of the halt construction order ... Kinder Morgan may be looking at suing under NAfTA regulations thinking it's going to be the only way they're going to make money on this project.
Or...
The BC government is looking for a way out. After all if they do persist with their campaign to shut down the project, the country wide carbon tax program wanted by Justin Trudeau will be crushed as Notley only promised to support it if the Kinder Morgan expansion was approved. The BC government would effectively shut down the country wide carbon tax program proposal which would be against their own policies.
I'm somewhat confounded by Jenny Twans assertion that their is massive support for her side against the expansion. When the Vancouver Sun ran a poll about the expansion 82% of respondents said they were in favour of it ... I was shocked at the lack of support for what the NDP was doing on this one. I would think that most responding to the Sun's poll would be from the the Vancouver area as it is where the paper is mostly read. It just might be that the 82% put jobs and earning export income, ahead of environmental concerns that seem to have been addressed by the Federal government.
Bottom line is there should have been an export crude pipeline long ago to the BC coast. It's a shame that we are not a major player in the energy space world wide. I lived in Dubai for 5 years..no crude exports there but about 2m production a day (half of Canada's daily production) mostly in Abu Dhabi and the dollars earned sure looks after citizens there very well. Imagine how we could have done a better job looking after our citizens had we been off the dime 20 or 30 years ago. We have not had anyone with the vision or guts to see that we had a much greater potential than what we have achieved. We are the Banana Republic North!
