Georgia's 2nd CK will be operational in Nov 2010http://www.thebrunswicknews.com/open_access/local_news/CYBERKNIFE-062210-HR-JG The Brunswick News 6/22/2010 Hospital to get tumor treatment robot Southeast Georgia Health System's hospital in Brunswick will soon be one of only two in the state to offer CyberKnife technology, a robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors without cutting a patient. The health system said the Georgia Department of Community Health approved its Certificate of Need request to offer the CyberKnife. It should be installed and operational at the hospital in November. "Currently, there are only about 200 CyberKnife systems in the world and until our CON was approved, the only one in Georgia was at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta," radiation oncologist Timothy A. Jamieson said. "CyberKnife has a proven record of success with thousands of cancer patients worldwide and having this technology will give our patients yet another treatment option without having to travel away from home." Anesthesia is not required. The treatment, which generally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, typically involves the administration of between 100 and 200 radiation beams delivered from different directions, each lasting a few seconds. "Prostate and lung cancer treatments are the fastest growing use of CyberKnife in the country," said Jamieson, who used the technology at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. "Prostate cancer can be effectively and safely treated in only five short non-invasive treatments with excellent results. This allows patients to maintain their busy schedule with minimal interruption or side effects." |
