Re: Intel To Introduce New 3D NAND Based SSDs in 2017 – Complete Storage Roadmap for 2017 Leaked, Including Optane SSDs
“Samsung has had this out for 2 years now and they work great. I can't see intel doing better.”
I can.
1. The volume leader in the area of memory technologies is historically based on manufacturing efficiencies and not necessarily in the cleverness of the memory architecture.
2.The memory elements are always secondary to the system level organization and architecture. Those performance requirements are typically defined by the processor, not the memory organization. In this area, Intel has more history in processors than Samsung.
3.The overall system-level cost/performance expectations are typically defined by the specific end application, which means that both application may end up excelling in different applications. So the volume of the end markets targeted by Samsung may be very different than those targeted by Intel.
Bottom line IMO-- plenty of room for both companies to succeed because this is just the preliminary round. The real challenge is to see which one establishes a user base that supports the eventual replacement of NAND with one of the other advanced non-volatile memory technologies.
