Re: New Bell ID Video? The decision to include the CryptoManger core in an SoC design is a decision that is made by the company doing the SoC design (i.e. Qualcomm for example). It is NOT a decision that is made by the Smart Phone developer unless that Smart Phone developer is also the same company who is doing the SoC design (i.e. Apple, Samsung).
Rambus has explained numerous times that Qualcomm will be using the CryptoManager core for Device personalization and supply chain management. https://www.rambus.com/use-cases-personalization/
What Rambus has NOT said (unless I missed something) is what Qualcomm devices will include the CryptoManager core. My guess is, Qualcomm will be adding the CryptoManager core into all of their new SoC designs starting at the 14nm process node, and my understanding is the 820 design was Qualcomm’s first 14nm design, which is currently being fabricated by Samsung.
Downstream Opportunities
If the SoC design does include the CryptoManager core, then that opens the door for downstream usage opportunities, above and beyond whatever the SoC design company might be using it for (i.e. Qualcomm using it for device personalization and supply chain management for example).
The OEM Smart Phone manufacture might decide to use it for additional phone personalization or other things, but the CryptoManger core is already there. It is NOT their decision whether it is built into the SoC design or not. That decision has already been made.
Beyond the OEM Smart Phone developer, then the software APP developers might decide to utilitize the CryptoManager core (i.e. for payment, authorization of video playback, ticketing, etc.).
This why I think an important metric for Rambus to start reporting is, the approximate number of CryptoManger cores that have been deployed into the field. This will help highlight the size and growth of the downstream opportunity.
If the CryptoManager core has been built into the 820, or any other SoC’s to come, then that means millions of Smartphones will be entering the market every quarter which opens the door to Rambus downstream opportunities. Apparently, Qualcomm will also be sharing in this downstream opportunity.
In my opinion, CryptoManager/Qualcomm is the reason Bell ID and Ecebs decided it was beneficial to be acquired by Rambus. If Bell ID and Ecebs believed secure elements or security hardware like CryptoManger was not needed any longer, then there would have been no reason to allow Rambus to acquire them. It was a win/win for both companies. |
