1. What is JEDEC and the JC-40 committee?
JEDEC is the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, which is a standard-setting organization for semiconductor industry.
JC-40 is a committee within JEDEC that focuses on standards and performance test criteria for integrated circuits in the fast-growing cloud and server-based memory environments.
2. Why did Rambus joining JEDEC? What is the significance to the JC-40 Committee?
Rambus has joined the JC-40 JEDEC committee in an effort to more closely collaborate with the industry on the development of standards that impact the server market and broader cloud computing industry.
3. What does Rambus hope to contribute to the JC-40?
Rambus is focused on inventing and designing innovative technologies and architectures in the memory and security space that help customers improve their time-to-market with high-performance, low-power, secured solutions. We believe our collaboration with JEDEC will both accelerate standards development, while also helping to further innovation within the broader memory market, with an emphasis on cloud computing and servers. As a technology leader in server-based memory, Rambus has developed innovative approaches and looks forward to working closely with the industry to develop and define future architectures that will help drive market growth, technology adoption and innovation.
4. As a member of JEDEC, has Rambus shifted its IP into the public domain?
Rambus remains a technology licensing company with a broad portfolio of innovations. Rambus has joined the specific JC-40 committee with a focus on contributing to the development of standards to improve memory technologies relative to server-centric architectures. Joining JEDEC will not affect our current customer/licensee agreements.
5. How will this affect your revenue moving forward?
Rambus will offer to license its IP in accordance with JEDEC’s patent policy for products that fully comply with specification(s) issued by the JC-40 committee. In addition, Rambus will continue to license its technology and innovations for products that fully comply with specifications from other JEDEC committees at reasonable rates that are consistent with the rates it charges under its current license agreements.
6. How is joining JEDEC now different from the past?
Rambus has resolved the issues of the past and is focused on developing new technologies and architectures that will help its customers solve the challenges they face in bringing new components, products or services to market. This new involvement in JEDEC is the first for the current management team with a goal of helping the industry and customers with the development of next-generation memory architectures as they relate to cloud-based servers.
